Think Spring 2019 with sj Miller
Queering Literacy Instruction:
Creating Safe, Inclusive, and Affirming English Language Arts Classrooms
Join MCTE on Friday, February 1, 2019, at the Winding Brook Conference Center (8240 S. Genuine Road, Shepherd, Michigan 48883) as Dr. sj Miller guides us in a day of professional learning around teaching and identity in the literacy classroom. We know—and research shows—that reading breeds empathy, but how can ELA teachers address binary gender identity issues with students and literature?
Dr. sj Miller instructs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In NCTE’s English Journal, sj won the 2005 Article of the Year Award for “Shattering Images of Violence in Young Adult Literature: Strategies for the Classroom” and is now the inaugural column editor of “Beyond Binary Gender Identities.” Recently, sj was selected as 2015 recipient of the Joanne Arnold Courage and Commitment Award for contributions to advocacy and education in the lives of LGBTQ people and beyond, and sj’s new book about gender identity justice in schools and communities is in press from Teachers College Press.
