Michigan Council of Teachers of English Awarded a 2017 Teachers for the Dream Affiliate Award
The Michigan Council of Teachers of English is committed to diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity in our profession and in our classrooms. This year, at the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English, MCTE was recognized, along with three other affiliates, as a 2017 NCTE Fund Teachers for the Dream Affiliate Awardee. The award includes $750 in funds that can be used by the MCTE to fund further initiatives to recognize and support diversity.
In a press release, the NCTE said, “Michigan Council president Mitch Nobis reports that the affiliate will focus on both retaining new teachers of color to the profession and supporting current teachers of diverse populations, then recruiting these teachers into MCTE and NCTE.” According to the NCTE, “The NCTE Fund Teachers for the Dream Affiliate Award presents grants to affiliates of NCTE that initiate a program that will recruit teachers of color into the affiliate or the profession. Judges look for programs that are thorough and that have the potential to recruit and retain teachers of color into the profession and the affiliate.”
The award funds will be used to host an event in the fall of 2018. Be sure to check mymcte.org for information as it becomes available.
